Fullen Dock Pushes Inland Frontier For Container-On-Barge Service
MEMPHIS, Tenn.—(March 10, 2004)—Until March of 2004, intermodal containers were not really "intermodal" when it came to moving them around interior North America. They were shipped by rail, truck and intracoastal vessels, but almost never by cost-efficient inland waterway barge lines.
This month, however, Memphis-based Fullen Dock and Warehouse announced an agreement to provide container-on-barge terminal services for Osprey Line, bringing low-cost container transport service to America's Distribution Center.
"Transporting container freight by river has been common in Europe for decades," explained Lanny Chalk, Fullen Dock's terminal manager. "In the U.S., cheap fuel and clear highways kept them moving by road or rail, but the rising cost of diesel and traffic congestion have made a lot of supply chain managers rethink the container-on-barge strategy. We're proud to be on the leading edge of this trend."
Osprey, a Houston-based, U.S.-flagged short-sea operator, also recently opened a unique container terminal at the Port of Greater Baton Rouge, where it moves containers to international marine shipping terminals in New Orleans and Houston.
As an Osprey terminal, Fullen Dock offers full depot level container services
with warehouse storage and transfer. Trucking and dispatch services are also
available.
“We believe that the Memphis market offers a significant
growth opportunity for our company,” Osprey Line President Rick Couch said.
Bookings, rate and schedule information is available through Osprey Line at www.ospreyline.com http://www.ospreyline.com/ phone (281) 867-1792. Terminal appointments and gate times in Memphis, TN are available through Lanny Chalk, Terminal Manager, Fullen Dock and Warehouse at (901) 358-9544.
